Auto repair in the United States is split between independent shops, dealership service departments and national chains. Independents handle most routine work (oil changes, brakes, tune-ups, check-engine diagnostics) at lower labor rates and often specialize in one make or in imports; dealers keep factory tools, software and warranty authority; chains sell speed and standard pricing on maintenance items. Most shops charge a diagnostic fee, credited toward the repair if you go ahead, and quote parts and labor separately. Certification matters: look for ASE-certified technicians and, in many states, a state repair license posted at the counter. Written estimates are required by law in most states before work begins, and you are entitled to your old parts if you ask.

Albany is in California, on the West Coast, where the climate ranges from foggy coast to hot inland valleys, wildfire season can affect air quality in late summer, and traffic is the main thing to plan around. US addresses list the street number and name, then the city, state abbreviation and ZIP code, and Albany follows the same pattern; a suite or apartment number such as Ste 200 refers to a unit inside the building. The map link on this page shows the exact spot.

Brought my car in for the first time yesterday after BMW quoted me close to $1600 for an oil change, air filter change, vehicle diagnostic, and brake fluid change. They were able to take me in the next morning and quoted me $600 less than BMW did. Service only took like three hours compared to a full day that BMW wouldβve taken. Appreciate their honesty, great prices and professionalism. Iβll be back!

I do not recommend this repair shop based on my experience. I brought my car in because I was hearing a noise from the engine in the morning when the car was cold. The shop gave me an estimate of about $1,100 to fix the issue. Later, I received a call from the shop saying my headlight was not working and that it would cost about $30 to fix. When everything was finished, the final bill was $1,923.52, and the shop owner claimed the headlight repair was close to $400, which was very different from what I was originally told. I took the car home, but the headlight still did not work. The next morning, the same engine noise came back as well. I went back to the shop, and they told me they were not going to charge me, but they still charged my credit card. Overall, I paid a lot of money, but the issues I brought the car in for were not fixed. Based on this experience, I would not recommend this shop. I suggest getting everything in writing before approving any work or charges.

I took my e92 335i with an n54 here because the check engine light kept coming back on. Scott was able to figure out the problem and got the repair done the same day for an extremely reasonable price. Theyβre very knowledgeable and I trust this ship whole heartedly with anything for my car.

If you care for your Ultimate Driving Machine with pride of ownership-and possess a modicum of literacy in automotive mechanics as to what makes your BMW tick-Berkeley Motor Works is NOT the kind of dealer-alternative shop to patronize. This shop sets the bar for an indifferent and dismissive attitude toward customer satisfaction-as UNSCRUPULOUS as I have yet experienced. CONTEXT: In February 2024, after running a complete engine diagnostic, owner Mike Schwarzbart recommended replacing a faulty thermostat in my 2002 BMW 745i to ensure the car would pass smog inspection. Fast forward to February 2026 and I have learned (by on-line reading and first-hand experience) that the thermostat in the N62 engine for the E65 model of BMW is notorious for premature failure. A second diagnostic in February 2026 (at a cost of $300.00) indicated the secondary air pump was functioning-as intended, however Mr. Schwarzbart advised that the secondary air ports were carbon-fouled (a common problem in N62-engined BMWs) and proceeded to recommend corrective work that included removal and reinstallation of the exhaust manifold-at a quote of $5,002.19+tax. I was not convinced of the accuracy of this di

I brought my BMW 740i in for brake noise and vibration issues, and I had a great experience. They clearly explained the diagnosis, showed me what was actually wrong, and helped prioritize what needed to be fixed now versus later. Communication was solid throughout the process, and the final cost felt fair for the quality of work. You can tell they really know BMWs. Iβd definitely recommend them to anyone looking for an honest BMW specialist.
